It is December, which means that all over the internet, including our page, there are blog posts about Christmas, Hanukah, and other holiday related things. I thought to myself, I am not going to post about any of those things. I don’t proclaim myself as being a Scrooge, but I just like to be different. Being different is what makes the world interesting.
What else happens in the month of December?
This year, the movie The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies, releases in major theaters Wednesday, December 17. Personally, I am excited about this release, as I love both the first and second movies in this trilogy. I also am a Lord of the Rings movie fan.
Christina Aguilera turns 33 this year on the 18th of December. Samuel L Jackson is 65 on December 21. Hayley Williams, lead singer of my favorite band Paramore, turns 25 on December 27. Stan Lee is 91 on December 28. Anthony Hopkins is 76 on December 31. Perhaps he will ask for fava beans this year.
The Wright brothers made their first flight December 17 in 1903. Charles Dickens published “A Christmas Carol” on December 19 in 1843. Apollo 8 landed on the moon in 1968 on December 24. Texas officially became the 28th state on December 29, 1845.
The first day of winter is December 21. In Northern Virginia, we have only had one day of snow so far (knock on wood). All year we have heard, “it is supposed to be a bad winter this year”. So far we have not had any issues, but once winter has officially started, we could be in for trouble.
December is a great month to shop. Most stores have incredible sales. Websites offer free shipping and extra discounts after December 25. The stores start adding spring merchandise, which means that everything fall and winter “must go”. As a previous retail employee, I know firsthand that this is the time to shop.
Most importantly, December is the month to spend time with friends and family. I like to take advantage of my vacation time in December, so that I can visit my parents and sister. Having one or two extra days around the holidays to just kick back and relax helps out so much to combat the stress related to congested stores and all of that eating!
I hope that everyone enjoys the holidays in December that they choose to personally celebrate. Hopefully these fun facts will keep you entertained in between watching A Christmas Story and drinking eggnog.
